Ligustrum ovalifolium, or Privet hedging as its more commonly known, inherits rich green leaves and develops creamy white flowers in July, which attract butterflies and birds. However, the flowers are generally clipped away. Ligustrum ovalifolium is almost a permanent evergreen hedge once established, making it a popular choice to have in the garden.

Privet hedging is a relatively, fast-growing plant (approximately 30m per annual). It is recommended to trim this shrub a couple of times during the summer months to encourage the formation of a dense, formal garden hedge that is resistant to pollution, making it a popular choice in urban and suburban gardens. Please note, the leaves and flowers are harmful if eaten.

Ligustrum ovalifolium will grow well virtually anywhere other than wet sites. Privet is suitable for coastal situations, although it might defoliate slightly in winter if near the coast.
